FORT EUSTIS, Va.— A team from the 597th Transportation Brigade, U.S. Army Transportation Command (ARTRANS), joined with other leaders from ARTRANS, the U.S. Transportation Command (TRANSCOM), the 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary), the 84th Training Command, 78th Training Division and the 377th Theater Sustainment command, to conduct a port survey of the strategic Port of Gulfport, Miss., during the week of September 8, 2025, in support of an upcoming training exercise that will test joint expeditionary capability to establish port dominance quickly and supply warfighters at the point of need.

A seaport task force, made up of ARTRANS soldiers and sailors from TRANSCOM’s Navy component, Military Sealift Command, will be tested on their ability rapidly establish and operate a port of debarkation and conduct cargo handling and movement operations to a forward unit in direct support of combatant commander requirements in the field.

The Reserve Component will then prove their ability to move cargo through all nodes of transportation: ground, sea, rail, and air.

Sgt. Major Joseph L. Pyles, ARTRANS Exercises, Future Operations, Readiness, Training and Integration Division, lead, explained the importance of logistics planning and Initial Site Survey (ISS) inspections prior to large joint force exercises.
“This was an exercise planning Initial Site Survey for a series of linked multi-model FY26 USTRANSCOM exercises. The [survey] of Port of Gulfport assessed the seaport for venue suitability to host a USTRANSCOM exercise,” said Pyles. “ISS’s are important planning events in joint exercise life cycles for determining where, when, and how joint exercises can be conducted– and whether identified locations meet exercise-specific requirements
Adam Gamez, 597th Transportation Brigade operations (S3) team member, worked with other stakeholders to conduct the port inspection; he explained TRANSCOM joint training exercises increase global logistics ability and strengthen and hone relationships between the joint force, port authority, and other civilian stakeholders, who all play a part in the mission.

Working together, partners from the military and civilian “fourth component” will demonstrate the nation’s ability to project the force and quickly deliver assets to our Troops on the ground as they deploy, engage and compete in Large Scale Combat Operations globally.

“It is crucial that ARTRANS works with the USTRANSCOM, Military Sealift Command, the Army Reserve Component and the 4th Component to provide realistic training opportunities,” said Gamez. “These exercises are critical to the success of our nation’s calling as we prepare to– and will, support the Warfighter.”
“No matter what theater or what time – ARTRANS will be ready.” added Gamez.
