DC Air National Guard transitions Command Chief

U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Anthony D. Sims assumed responsibility as the District of Columbia Air National Guard state command chief from U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Sean M. Larson during a change of responsibility ceremony at the D.C. Armory Nov. 9, 2025.

“Today, we gather for a significant occasion, the change of responsibility ceremony for our state command chief,” said U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Matthew R. McDonough, commander, 113th Wing, D.C. National Guard. “This event represents continuity and leadership, trust, and the strength of the enlisted core that keeps our organization grounded and mission-ready.”

“To the Airmen and Soldiers of this Guard, thank you for showing up every day ready to serve, ready to adapt, and ready to represent the best of the District and this country,” said Larson, a 39-year Air Force veteran who served in multiple roles in the 113th Wing. “As I pass responsibility to Chief Sims, I do so with confidence. The story of the D.C. Guard continues, written by people who serve not for recognition, but for purpose.”

“My vision is to foster growth and mentorship and make D.C. a place where others want to come,” said Sims. Prior to his current assignment, Sims served as the senior enlisted leader, Joint Forces Headquarters, D.C. National Guard, where he provided strategic advice to the director of the Joint Staff on enlisted force matters, promoted discipline and professional development, and ensured the welfare and readiness of the enlisted D.C Guard members. He also served as command senior enlisted leader for the Maryland National Guard. “I want to foster a culture of teamwork, innovation, and excellence. By keeping those values in sight, I know we can accomplish anything."

As state command chief, Sims will serve as the chief enlisted advisor to the commander, providing counsel on mission readiness, professional development, training, morale, and welfare of enlisted D.C. Guard members.
