KADENA AIR BASE, Japan – Laughter and friendly competition filled the air as military spouses raced across Kadena, solving clues, tackling challenges, and building connections during the Spouses’ Amazing Race, held Oct. 21–23 at Kadena Air Base.
After a long hiatus, the three-day event returned with renewed energy—inviting teams of spouses to compete in challenges inspired by the popular television show The Amazing Race. Participants followed clues to more than a dozen locations each day, testing their problem-solving, teamwork, and endurance.
While the event brought plenty of excitement, its purpose ran deeper: strengthening the bonds that hold Team Kadena together.
“We’re on this island away from family, and events like this really help bring spouses together and build a community,” said Rose Sorenson, a 2025 Spouses' Amazing Race Committee member. “It’s nice to have events that help us meet new people and build friendships.”
Planned and executed by the 2025 Spouses' Amazing Race Committee, the event highlighted the resilience, creativity and camaraderie that define the Kadena community. Units across the base supported the event by hosting stations, cheering on participants, and contributing to a shared sense of connection.
At each stop, spouses faced mental and physical challenges that encouraged teamwork and problem-solving; from completing puzzles to navigating scavenger-style tasks designed to bring out their competitive spirit.
For many, the event offered an opportunity to reconnect, recharge, and strengthen the bonds that unite the military community.
“When spouses have everything handled at home and have strong community ties, it allows our active duty spouses to focus on the mission." said Lauren McCoy, 2025 Spouses’ Amazing Race participant. “Part of our job is to make their job easier.”
The 18th Wing continues to recognize the essential role of military spouses in maintaining readiness, morale, and connection across Team Kadena. Events like the Spouses’ Amazing Race highlight how unity at home fuels success abroad.
