ANSBACH, Germany – Soldiers from the 2-159th Attack Battalion, 12th Combat Aviation Brigade demonstrated exceptional skill, teamwork, and technical proficiency during the Signal Warrior Challenge held on Oct. 23, 2025, at Katterbach Army Airfield, Germany.
The Signal Warrior Challenge was designed to test and validate soldiers’ tactical communications capabilities under simulated field and combat conditions. The event brought together 11 soldiers representing multiple military occupational specialties, including systems specialists (25U), AH-64 attack helicopter repairers (15R), and human resources specialists (42A).
Under the guidance of the battalion leadership and subject matter experts, competitors were evaluated on their ability to assemble and operate the OE-254 antenna while maintaining secure and reliable voice communications in a dynamic, high-pressure environment.
“The training was designed to not only teach soldiers the importance of communications, but to also teach my guys how to train others and with that we were successful,” said Staff Sgt. Tony Cochran, 2-159th Attack Battalion Non-Commissioned Officer in charge of the Systems Specialists.
“I think everyone did a great job even with the weather not being the best, but the Soldiers were willing to learn and that’s what I’m most grateful for,” said Spc. Stevin Capella, a 2-159th Attack Battalion Systems Specialist.
Capella’s team, which included two Human Resources Specialists and one Systems Specialist placed first in the Signal Warrior Challenge by completely setting up their antenna and getting their communications radio working.
The 12th Combat Aviation Brigade remains committed to advancing mission readiness and interoperability across the European theater. Through realistic, hands-on training events like the Signal Warrior Challenge, the brigade continues to strengthen its ability to provide reliable, expeditionary communications and aviation support in any operational environment.
