More than 60 Wisconsin National Guard Soldiers with the 732nd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company arrived at Volk Field Oct. 3, following a nine-month Middle East mobilization.

While deployed, the National Guardsmen provided theater-level sustainment to U.S. and coalition forces operating within the Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve area of responsibility encompassing Iraq, Syria and Jordan.

“To the Maverick Soldiers – you truly embodied the spirit of Wisconsin,” said Lt. Col. Maria Garcia, 732nd CSSB commander. “Our battalion staff was often the unseen hand that kept the mission going. It was our Soldiers that coordinated with the joint force and our coalition partners to ensure companies carried out missions in some of the most complex and demanding environments.”

After reuniting with friends and loved ones, the Soldiers and their guests attended a ceremony at which the unit’s colors, its official flag, was uncased symbolizing their return from deployment and successful completion of their mission.

“Your efforts in the Middle East supported two critical operations, Operation Inherent Resolve and Operation Spartan Shield, which are both vital to the security and stability of the region,” said Maj. Gen. Matthew Strub, Wisconsin’s adjutant general. “You weren't just logistics experts; you were the backbone of the Middle East mission.”

Strub further relayed several examples of the support functions carried out by the 732nd Soldiers, despite the heightened threat environment posed by the 12-Day War between Iran and Israel.

“You operated under incredible pressure, often in dangerous and unpredictable conditions,” he stated. “Despite the uncertainty and the stress, you all stood firm, performed your duties, and maintained the readiness of the entire theater.”

Strub and Garcia also praised the family members in attendance for the steadfast support of their deployed Soldiers over the past nine months.

“Your sacrifice, patience and resilience carried us through the months away, and the countless milestones you shouldered without us did not go unnoticed,” Garcia said. “Words like thank you can never fully capture the depth of our gratitude. But please know that your strength was our foundation.”

The ceremony concluded with the singing of the Army song before Command Sgt. Maj. Tonya Robers, senior enlisted leader of the 732nd CSSB, dismissed the Maverick Battalion Soldiers to return to their homes.

“As you return home to your families, to the ones who supported you throughout this entire deployment, know that you've left an indelible mark on history,” Strub said. “You've made a difference in the lives of those you served with, and you helped shape the future of the Army in a way that few will ever know.”
