The 59th Medical Training Squadron’s Laboratory Flight unveiled its newly upgraded CORE-Chemistry lab during a ribbon cutting ceremony on Aug. 5, 2025, at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. The $3.9 million, two-year project introduced cutting-edge Roche cobas® integrated laboratory solutions designed to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and readiness across the 59th Medical Wing.
The improvements include the Roche Navify® Lab Operations, cobas® 8100 automated workflow series, and cobas® pro integrated solutions. Together, these systems strengthen the 59th MDW’s mission by delivering faster, more reliable results while streamlining processes and minimizing errors.
“These advancements maximize operational efficiency, optimize resource utilization, and support the 59th MDW’s goal of delivering world-class medical care and maintaining a highly prepared fighting force,” said Maxanne Groven, technical supervisor, CORE-Chemistry.
Beyond improving patient care, the upgrades also expand medical education opportunities for laboratory staff, providing hands-on experience with advanced technology while allowing technicians to focus on more complex, critical tasks. By enabling rapid and efficient sample processing, the systems bolster readiness and ensure Airmen remain healthy and mission-capable.
Groven emphasized the project’s collaborative success, crediting Roche Diagnostic Corp. and multiple 59 MDW units—including the 59 MDTS Laboratory Flight, 59 MDW Facilities & Systems, 59th Logistics Readiness Squadron, and Cerner-Oracle/MHS Genesis—for their contributions.
“Their combined expertise and support were critical to bringing this project to fruition,” Groven said.
The upgraded CORE-Chemistry lab represents the latest step in the 59th Medical Wing’s continued commitment to innovation, patient care, and operational readiness.
