SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii - The 500th Military Intelligence Brigade-Theater (MIB-T) launched its first-ever traveling Pacific Vanguard University (PVU) this year, showcasing how the brigade's real-world missions and capabilities support higher headquarters across the Indo-Pacific.
Pacific Vanguard University is a series of targeted informational briefs designed to highlight the importance of how the brigade executes its mission in support of commander priorities, thus "Setting the Theater," in line with the Indo-Pacific Command's vision for success in the region.
"PVU is an opportunity for the 500th to showcase its capabilities, as well as the real-world missions to each of our higher headquarters," said Capt. Charlson Ro, 500th MIB-T Innovation Officer.
Traditionally held at the 500th MIB-T headquarters on Schofield Barracks, PVU now brings its presentations directly to higher headquarters across Oahu.
"The goal is to maximize participation by bringing our briefs directly to higher headquarters, rather than asking them to travel to us," said Ro.
The “road show” format prioritizes accessibility and enhances involvement across commands to inform senior leaders, partners and allies.
Each battalion highlights unique capabilities, from counterintelligence, human and signals intelligence operations and geospatial innovation. The briefs also include operational vignettes from past years, demonstrating how 500th MIB-T is a major factor in deterring the enemy in the Indo-Pacific.
The initiative underscores the brigade's unique role among theater intelligence units.
Leaders note that few, if any, other military intelligence brigades conduct an effort like PVU, making it a distinct platform for education, collaboration and operational alignment.
"PVU will continue to evolve as the Brigade receives additional capabilities over the coming year,” said Col. Shawn Callahan, 500th Military Intelligence Brigade-Theater Commander.
PVU also reflects Army modernization priorities by introducing new systems, tools, and intelligence capabilities to leaders across the theater. The program serves as a bridge between the brigade's operational experience and the joint, combined needs of higher headquarters, ensuring intelligence efforts remain aligned with broader Indo-Pacific strategies.
"The core mission will remain the same,” said Callahan, “informing leaders and staff about the importance of intelligence in our ‘Set the Theater’ mission.”
