    31st Fighter Wing

The 57th Rescue Squadron participated in exercise Saber Junction 25 at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center in Hohenfels, Germany Aug. 14 - 21, 2025. Saber Junction is an annual U.S.-led exercise developed to advance NATO allies and partners’ interoperability and readiness.

SJ25 is a demonstration of the NATO’s Allied nations’ ability to seamlessly operate together to maintain a stable security environment. The exercise required over 7,600 personnel and 15 countries to coordinate in a ground-based large-scale conflict. Saber Junction promotes regional stability while increasing readiness, strengthening partner capabilities and fostering trust.

“Saber Junction culminated a year-long training cycle focused on improving the survivability and lethality of our Air Force Special Warfare teams against threats we can expect in EUCOM,” said Lt. Col Haralambos Theologis, 57th Rescue Squadron commander.

Pararescuemen from the 57th RQS showcased their multirole AFSPECWAR Command capabilities by participating in air and ground rescue operations, to include working hand-in-hand with U.S. Army UH-60 Blackhawks from the 1st Armored Division Combat Aviation Brigade.

“The opportunity to train against realistic threats showcased our ability to conduct personnel recovery in all domains and from any platform,” said Theologis.

The 57th RQS also played a major role in regional security; enhancing joint force capabilities in a diverse ground environment by working with Army units to patrol the surrounding area. During patrols, the Pararescuemen used their high level of expertise and experience to ensure the safety of the Airmen and Soldiers while enduring simulated attacks and surveillance.

“SJ 25 highlighted AFSPECWAR’s capacity to enable airpower and joint objectives alongside partners and NATO allies,” said Theologis.

Exercises like SJ25 are important to ensure efficient operations in contested environments. The U.S. Air Force and Army regularly participate in joint exercises in order to build cohesion and relationships with partners and Allies.

The 57th Rescue Squadron leads, organizes, trains and equips Guardian Angel weapons system and combat support teams to conduct day and night personnel recovery operations in combat, as well as to provide combatant commanders with options to report, locate, recover and reintegrate isolated personnel.
