    Lodging Refresh Underway

GRISSOM AIR FORCE BASE, INDIANA, UNITED STATES

    09.08.2025

Story by Master Sgt. Wendy Day

    434th Air Refueling Wing

Grissom Air Reserve Base, Ind. –Team Grissom is giving its lodging facilities a fresh, modern look as a major renovation project gets underway in building 472. The project, which began this fall, includes updated paint, carpet, wallpaper, new furnishings, desks, televisions, and ceiling fans—an effort designed to improve comfort and enhance the quality of stay for Airmen and their families.

“This is the most extensive renovation we’ve seen in years,” said Jessica Achey, Grissom ARB Lodging Manager, who has worked at Grissom for 14 years. “We’ve made upgrades here and there, but this time it’s a complete refresh. It’s exciting to see how it will look and feel when it’s done.”

The Air Force requires regular updates to lodging facilities every 10–12 years to keep them in step with modern standards. According to Michael Sampson, 434 Force Support Squadron, who helps oversee sustainment projects on base, this cycle of investment ensures Airmen can count on reliable, welcoming accommodations whenever they arrive at Grissom.

“The goal is to provide our Airmen with a positive lodging experience,” Sampson said. “We’re replacing all the furnishings and updating two floors at a time to minimize disruption. If everything stays on schedule, the work should be completed before the New Year.”

The project does mean some temporary adjustments. During the renovations, nearly half the building’s 150 rooms will be unavailable, and some guests may be placed in off-base hotels. Still, staff remain focused on maintaining the highest level of service.

For Achey, who takes pride in serving those who serve, the project represents both change and opportunity. “Sometimes we’re the last civilian faces Airmen see before they deploy, and the first they see when they return. That’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly,” she said. “Having updated, comfortable lodging is one more way we can support them and their families.”

Future plans include offering pet-friendly rooms and exploring additional amenities that will better accommodate long-term training students and Airmen with families.

“The upgrades will make lodging feel newer, fresher, and more welcoming,” Achey said. “It’s about creating the best possible environment for the people who dedicate themselves to keeping us safe.”
