MANAMA, Bahrain – Forces from U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/U.S. 5th Fleet (NAVCENT/C5F) and the Jordanian Armed Forces (JAF) participated in the annual, bilateral maritime exercise Infinite Defender 25, off the coast of Aqaba, Jordan, Sept. 14-18.

The exercise focused on bilateral maritime infrastructure protection, explosive ordnance disposal, and anti-terrorism force protection, and provided a unique opportunity for U.S. and JAF armed forces to share knowledge and experience, expand levels of cooperation and enhance existing defensive capabilities.

“Participating in Infinite Defender 25 was a great way to strengthen the relationship and trust between JAF and NAVCENT,” said Capt. Brian Reitter, commander, Task Force 56, who led the planning and completion of the exercise. “Integrating processes, systems, and command and control functions with our regional partners not only fortified our relationship, but provided us an opportunity to improve our mutual defensive capabilities in unfamiliar environments.”

U.S. forces playing a role in the exercise include a Navy EOD and dive team, a Coast Guard maritime engagement team, a Marine Corps platoon, and additional staff and personnel.

Infinite Defender 25 consisted of at sea and in-port portions, where U.S. forces engaged with their counterparts in the JAF during various military exercises. At-sea exercise topics included defense against fast boat attacks and visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) training. In-port exercise topics included diving, harbor defense and small arms training.

NAVCENT/C5F is the maritime component commander of U.S. Central Command, whose area of responsibility encompasses about 2.5 million square miles of water area and includes the Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, Gulf of Oman and parts of the Indian Ocean. This expanse, comprised of 21 countries, includes three critical chokepoints at the Strait of Hormuz, the Suez Canal, and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait at the southern tip of Yemen.
