YAKIMA TRAINING CENTER, Wash. – Rockets lit up the midnight sky over central Washington as Soldiers from the 17th Field Artillery Brigade conducted a live-fire qualification from August 11–14. The live fire event captured three weeks of artillery certification preparation for Alpha “Archangel” Battery, 1st Battalion, 94th Field Artillery Regiment, honing warfighting skills and operational readiness in support of I Corps long range fires.

Artillery Table VI, also known as a section-level live-fire qualification, enables battery commanders to evaluate the proficiency of individual crews and their ability to effectively process and execute HIMARS fire missions. This evaluation includes real-time scenarios, such as making use of cover and hide sites, rapid rocket pod reloading, and fire mission execution under tight time constraints. Each task reflects the most complex and rigorous conditions units may face during combat operations.

Alpha Battery Soldiers trained continuously, both day and night, to meet the certification standards. Their efforts culminated in two evenings of live-fire operations under limited visibility, testing not only technical skills but also communication, coordination, and cohesion under pressure. For the majority of the crews, this was their first live-fire event together.

“Field exercises like this are critical to ensure we can deliver rocket and missile fires at a moment’s notice,” said Capt. Benito Rodriguez, commander of Alpha Battery. “These particular crews are completely new, with one chief serving as a cavalry scout just months ago, so being able to achieve this certification is a testament to their hard work and dedication.”

The training at Yakima enhances the battery’s ability to deliver precision fires and strengthens the operational readiness of I Corps’ long-range fire support enterprise. By maintaining disciplined, agile, and lethal formations, the 17th Field Artillery Brigade ensures that I Corps remains postured to deter aggression and defeat any adversary in a contested environment.

As the U.S. Army continues to emphasize all domain continuous transformation, exercises like this serve as foundational events that bridge technical mastery with operational execution. For Alpha Battery, this certification is more than a training milestone. It is a reaffirmation of their readiness to support the broader strategic objectives of I Corps and the U.S. Army.
