FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kansas – Munson Army Health Center will begin its annual seasonal influenza vaccine campaign with four walk-in dates at the Frontier Conference Center on post for TRICARE beneficiaries aged 6 months and older.

Flu shots will be available on the following dates:

    • Friday, Oct. 3 – Noon to 5 p.m.
    • Friday, Oct. 17 – Noon to 4 p.m.
    • Friday, Nov. 7 – Noon to 4 p.m.
    • Tuesday, Nov. 18 – Noon to 6 p.m.

The Frontier Conference Center is located at 350 Biddle Blvd., Fort Leavenworth.

All TRICARE categories, including TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Select, and TRICARE For Life may receive their vaccines at the walk-in events at the FCC. Beneficiaries aged 10 years and up must present their Department of Defense identification card. Children 17 years and under must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

The flu vaccine will also be available Oct. 25 during Fort Leavenworth Retiree Appreciation Day at the Lewis and Clark Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for eligible military retirees and their family members.

“Getting vaccinated against influenza each year is the best way to protect yourself, your family, and your community,” said 1st Lt. Kennedy Reeves, a public health nurse and chief of Munson’s Department of Public Health. “Flu can lead to serious illness, hospitalization, or even death, especially among young children, older adults, and those with certain medical conditions.”

Reeves added that influenza viruses change from year to year, making annual vaccination important. The flu vaccine reduces the risk of infection, and for those who do become ill, it can lessen the severity and duration of symptoms.

Common symptoms of influenza include fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, and fatigue. Complications may include pneumonia, worsening of chronic medical conditions, and in some cases, life-threatening outcomes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend annual flu vaccination for everyone six months and older, unless otherwise advised by a healthcare provider.
