Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command

In September 2025, Soldiers and civilians from Jacksonville, Fla., Detachment, 841st Transportation Battalion, 597th Transportation Brigade, Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC), oversaw and assisted 3rd Infantry Division (ID) Troops deploying in support of U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) as they conducted cargo reception and vessel loading operations at the Port of Jacksonville (JAXPORT), Fla., Dames Point Marine Terminal.

Logistics professionals from the 841st coordinated with port authorities, support units and civilian partners (often referred to as the “fourth component”) to facilitate reception and staging of 3rd ID vehicles and cargo containers, ensuring that across three separate vessels, freight was safely and efficiently loaded in alignment with delivery timelines and procedural requirements.

Lt. Colonel Christopher Fields, 841st Trans. Bde. commander, who oversaw the operation, praised port personnel and stressed the importance of the affiliation between the military and civilian officials there.

“Our relationship with the JAXPORT authority couldn’t be stronger.” said Fields. “I am very pleased with the support and the communications between our teams to meet our mission.”
“The Port of Jacksonville/Dames Point has the infrastructure to handle anything we send their way,” he added
The Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT), which includes the Dames Point facility, is one of the nation’s designated strategic seaports contributing to national defense here in the U.S.; it one of the Florida port on call 24/7 to move military cargo; as a strategic seaport, JAXPORT can also be tasked to move humanitarian aid throughout the country– and the world, in times of need.

“JAXPORT is proud to serve as a port of national significance and a trusted partner in supporting military moves,” said JAXPORT CEO Eric Green. “With the ample acreage of the Dames Point terminal, we can accommodate even the largest deployments of equipment and aircraft. Our entire team is committed to seamless execution, working closely with stevedores [dockworkers] to ensure every phase of the operation runs efficiently.”
The Dames Point terminal serves as a key hub for containerized cargo and vehicle transport, offering direct deep water vessel access to the Atlantic from the St. Johns River and an intermodal container transfer facility that allows for the seamless transfer of containers and bulk cargo, and roll-on/roll-off services for a variety of vehicles, between vessels, trucks and trains with direct access to three major interstate highways and a Class I railroad with 40 plus daily trains across the U.S.
