United Nations Command (UNC), U.S. Forces Korea, Combined Forces Command Commander Gen. Xavier T. Brunson has welcomed the appointment of Australian Army Maj. Gen. Scott Winter as United Nations Command’s next deputy commander.
Winter will take up the role in the new year upon his promotion to lieutenant general. He will succeed Canadian Lt. Gen. Derek Macaulay, who has served as deputy commander since December 2023.
Brunson, who assumed command of UNC in December 2024, said Winter was an excellent addition to his leadership team.
“I have had the privilege of serving with Maj. Gen. Winter before, and I know firsthand the professionalism, leadership, and vision he brings,” Brunson said. “As UNC deputy commander, his skills and experience will be invaluable to UNC as we continue our mission of maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.”
United Nations Command, established in 1950 at the outbreak of the Korean War, is charged with enforcing the Korean Armistice Agreement and coordinating the international community’s ongoing commitment to peace and security on the Korean Peninsula. Today, UNC unites military personnel from 18 member states that contributed forces under the U.N. flag during the Korean War and continue to support peace building on the Korean Peninsula.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of UNC, the oldest multinational military coalition operating under the U.N. banner. The milestone is being observed with commemorations that highlight UNC’s enduring role in fostering international cooperation and deterring aggression.
Brunson said Winter’s selection reflects Australia’s long record of support for the command.
“Australia was among the first nations to answer the U.N. call in 1950, and its commitment has never wavered,” Brunson said. “Maj. Gen. Winter’s leadership will carry forward that proud legacy.”
