Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Northwest awarded $18.6 million to Tompco-Triton Joint Venture to demolish the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF) Marine Machine Shop in Bremerton, Washington, Sept. 17.

The firm-fixed-price, design-bid-build task order was issued against the Northwest Multiple Award Construction Contract. Demolition is set to begin in October 2025, with a completion date of April 2027.

The building is one of 20 slated for renovation or demolition over the next few decades as part of the overall plan to optimize the shipyard under the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program. Its removal serves a dual purpose.

“The demolition of the PSNS & IMF Marine Machine Shop is another step forward in our seismic risk mitigation process,” said NAVFAC Northwest commander Capt. Preston Taylor. “Removing the shop paves the way for the proposed Multi-Mission Dry Dock project, or M2D2—a key component in equipping the fleet of the future with the shore-based skills and resources needed for operational success.”

“Meeting the Navy’s needs means ensuring our foundations are strong. Clearing the Marine Machine Shop is not an end—it is the beginning of a more modern shipyard complex capable of supporting the Fleet of the future,” said Capt. J.D. Crinklaw, Commander, PSNS & IMF. “By investing in our industrial backbone—the facilities, infrastructure, and the skilled men and women who sustain our ships—we honor the work that has been done here while paving the way for what comes next. These efforts directly reinforce our readiness, ensuring the Navy can meet any challenge, anytime, anywhere.”
