Sembach, Germany — The U.S. Army Reserve’s 7th Mission Support Command hosted a three-day resiliency summit Sept. 10-12 at Sembach Kaserne.

The event, held with the 21st Theater Sustainment Command and the 86th Airlift Wing, brought together Soldiers, civilians and members of the Kaiserslautern military community for training, team-building activities, briefings and discussions focused on prevention and safety.

“The goal of this summit is to arm our Soldiers, civilians and family members with information about the resources that are available to them in their community,” said Kevin Smith, the 7th MSC’s suicide prevention program manager and event organizer.

Each day centered on a different aspect of resilience: family on the first day, mental on the second, and holistic on the final day.

U.S. Army Reserve Col. Charles Moulton, the 7th MSC deputy commanding officer, opened the summit with remarks.

“Mission success is not measured solely by technical expertise or operational capability,” Moulton said. “It is equally measured by the resilience of our people — their ability to overcome adversity, adapt under pressure and provide steadfast support to one another.”

Guest presenters included representatives from the Army Ready and Resilient Performance Center, Equal Opportunity and the Family Advocacy Program, along with medical professionals and a chaplain.

“A lot of times we say to ourselves, if I only had known this or that, I could have made a better decision,” Smith said. “We’re making sure they know what’s available to them for whatever issue might come up in this community.”

Retired Chief Warrant Officer 4 Clifford Bauman, now an author and self-described “mental health warrior,” also presented at the summit. He spoke about surviving his own suicide attempt after volunteering as a 9/11 first responder at the Pentagon.

“It was moving and inspiring,” said Master Sgt. Alvin Anderson, the 7th MSC military equal opportunity advisor and summit attendee.

Anderson said what resonated with him most from Bauman’s presentation was the idea that “life promotion” is a key to suicide prevention.

“Bad things can happen,” Anderson said. “Resilience is being able to bounce back from adversity. Having the tools in your toolkit is essential.”
