Cadet Evan Rice from Huntsville, Alabama is one of 14 Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) cadets from universities nationwide who spent the summer interning with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District.
The USACE-sponsored ROTC Engineer Internship Program connects classroom learning with practical experience to prepare future Army officers for leadership roles in technical fields.
“My USACE internship has been an incredible experience,” exclaimed Rice. “I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the USACE mission and had valuable, insightful experiences that will benefit me in my future career as an Army officer.”
Rice reflected on one experience that stood out to him.
“I had the opportunity to go on a hydrographic survey mission,” said Rice. “While aboard the hydrographic survey vessel, it was fascinating to see how USACE gathers data and determines which areas to dredge next so ships can safely travel up and down the Savannah River. Prior to this internship, I was unaware USACE was involved in this mission.”
Rice, a student at Auburn University in Alabama majoring in Information Systems Management, aspires to be an Aviation officer in the active-duty Army.
“My father is a retired colonel who flew UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters for the Army, and I have been around aircraft all of my life,” explained Rice. “My father’s service inspired me to pick up the torch and carry on the family tradition.”
