Training Air Wing SIX (TW-6) held a change of command ceremony at the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, Florida, in which Capt. Douglas White was relieved by Capt. Clay Waddill as TW-6 commodore, Sept. 12.

Chief of Naval Air Training’s (CNATRA) Chief of Staff, Capt. Paul Flores presided over the event and presented White with the Legion of Merit for his exceptionally meritorious conduct and extraordinary leadership throughout his tour. While serving as commodore, White’s squadrons executed a total of 27,745 sorties, 31,261 flight hours, and completed 19,478 simulator hours resulting in 508 Student Naval Flight Officers and 22 Air Vehicle Pilots receiving their “Wings of Gold.”

“Capt. White’s efforts were instrumental to Chief of Naval Air Training being awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation for outstanding flight training, exceeding 105 percent of its training requirements and fully manning all Fleet Replacement Squadrons in Fiscal Year 2024,” said Capt. Flores. “His leadership and dedication set the standard for achieving excellence during periods of challenging primary and advanced training aircraft availability.”

A native of Edina, Missouri, White graduated with merit from the United States Naval Academy in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in marine engineering. Additionally, he holds a Master of Military Art and Science degree in modern military history from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, where he was selected as an Art of War Scholar. White earned his Wings of Gold as a Naval Flight Officer (NFO) in January of 2002 and completed two operational tours with the "Black Ravens" of Electronic Attack Squadron VAQ- 135, and a training officer tour with the “Scorpions” of VAQ-132. He returned to command VAQ-132 during a Western Pacific Deployment. His deployments were in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom, Operation New Dawn, Odyssey Dawn, Unified Protector, Enduring Freedom and Inherent Resolve.

“Serving as commodore of Training Wing 6 has been one of the greatest honors of my career. Leading such a dedicated team committed to shaping the next generation of aviators has been both a privilege and a profound responsibility,” said White. “I have no doubt TW-6 will continue to excel under leadership from Capt. Waddill.”

Waddill is from Vero Beach, Florida. He graduated from Florida State University in 1997 and after a brief period in the corporate sector, was commissioned through Officer Candidate School in 2002. He earned his NFO wings in 2003. At sea, Waddill served as commanding officer of “Grey Knights” of Patrol Squadron (VP) 46. His other operational assignments include department head with “The Golden Swordsmen” of VP-47, fleet replenishment and maritime weapons and tactics instructor with VP-30.

“It’s an honor to take command of Training Wing 6 and lead a team that represents the very best in naval aviation training,” said Waddill. “I’m grateful for the foundation laid by Capt. White and CNATRA and look forward to continuing the mission— World class Naval Aviators and Flight Officers delivered on-time and ready for the Fleet.”

TW-6 is headquartered in the "Cradle of Naval Aviation" aboard NAS Pensacola, Florida. Responsible for all Chief of Naval Air Training (CNATRA) Naval Flight Officer (NFO) training and production, TW-6 graduates approximately 300 United States Navy, Marine Corps and Foreign Military Service (FMS) students annually.
