DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- Lt. Col. Venus Victorino took command of the 943d Aerospace Medical Squadron during an assumption of command ceremony here September 7.

The assumption of command is a military tradition that formally signifies the transfer of responsibility and authority from one commanding officer to another, symbolized through the passing of a guidon.

Victorino joined the military in 1998 and received her commission following her graduation from San Diego State University in 2006. She is a board-certified critical care and flight registered nurse and has held various positions within the 452 Medical Group and 943d Rescue Group in support of the enroute casualty care system. Prior to this assignment, Victorino was the Chief Nurse at the 943d AMDS.

“The strength of the 943d AMDS has always been its people. I am honored to lead such a talented and dedicated team and look forward to serving alongside them. Together, we will continue to help advance the mission of the 943 RQG and care for one another as a strong, united team,” said Victorino.

Col. Christopher Escajeda, 943d Rescue Group commander, presided over the ceremony and passed the guidon to Victorino, officially appointing her as the squadron commander.

“Lt. Col. Victorino embodies the multi-capable airman concept by bringing forth a wealth of knowledge and perspective from the Navy and applying it to AMDS’s unique mission set,” said Escajeda.

The 943d Rescue Group, a geographically separated unit of the 920th Rescue Wing, is located at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona. The 943d RQG performs day and night combat rescue missions to search for, locate and recover isolated personnel. The group also provides search and rescue support for humanitarian and disaster relief operations at the request of the United State Government through FEMA, foreign governments, and the International Civil Aviation Organization.
