JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. – The 560th RED HORSE Squadron welcomed its new commander, Lt. Col. William Barnes, during a change of command ceremony Sept. 6, 2025 at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina.

“Taking command is no small feat,” stated Air Force Reserve Command Civil Engineer Group Commander Col. Emily Steinfort before releasing command. “It is a responsibility that demands confidence, dedication and genuine commitment to the airmen that sit here today.”

Barnes, who was once the Director of Operations at the 556th RED HORSE Squadron at Hurlburt Field, Florida, put the red hat back on after his recent tour at Air Force Reserve Command as the Readiness and Sustainment Branch Chief.

“Our mission is to go to the furthest flown corners of the earth and build stuff,” Barnes said. “I expect you guys all to be ready!”

The change of command is a military tradition, dating back to the Roman era that formally transfers authority and responsibility from one commanding officer to another. This allows unit members the opportunity to witness the new leader taking the position.
