CAMP ITAMI, Japan – Trilateral forces, The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF), 1st (Australian) Division (1 (AS) Div), and U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC) service members held a Combined Arms Rehearsal (CAR) during Yama Sakura 89 (YS89) in Camp Senzo, Japan, Aug. 25, 2025.
A CAR is a military event to coordinate planning and identify friction points prior to operations. Taking place over a large map, leaders coordinate forces and plan outcomes using exercise locations to simulate notional applications to brief generals for final decisions. CARs are essential to the planning phase and are vital to avoid confusion during battle.
“My goal for this combined arms rehearsal is that we would walk away with how we see ourselves ready on the terrain and how we will work through problems together,” said U.S. Army Maj. Gen. James Bartholomees, Commanding General of the 25th Infantry Division.
Bartholomees, joined by JGSDF Lt. Gen. Makoto Endo, Commanding General of Middle Army, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force JGSDF and Australian Brig. Gen. Shane Gabriel, Deputy Commanding General of 1st (Australia) Division, led the CAR. The trilateral exercise coordinated combined forces to execute mission objectives in accordance with shared objectives to further strengthen allied bonds. Training and readiness are essential to generating integrated deterrence in an increasingly complex regional security environment, and Yama Sakura is an important sign of the collective strength of the U.S.-Japan alliance.
YS89 is the largest and most complex forward U.S. Army and Japan Command Post exercise. For more than 40 years, Yama Sakura has focused on the development and refinement of the JGSDF and the theater's Army’s efforts in the areas of bilateral planning, coordination, and interoperability. The Australian Army is participating in Yama Sakura for the third time, after 10 years of participating as observers turning the exercise into a trilateral operation. During YS89, U.S. Army soldiers work alongside JGSDF partners and Australian counterparts everyday, honing their skills and building relationships. Exercises like YS89 send signals to our adversaries while reinforcing the bonds with our allies.
