TALL AFAR, Iraq (Feb. 19, 2006) -- Transfer of Authority between the Brave Rifles and Ready First Combat Teams took place at a ceremony at the theater on Forward Operating Base Sykes.

The 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment ending a year-long deployment, transferred authority to the 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, who arrived at FOB Sykes last month.

"Today marks the change of authority between two great Combat Teams," said Maj. Gen. Thomas Turner, commander, 101st Airborne Division.

Since February 2005, the 3rd ACR has added to its long proud history of mounted rifleman. They have made a lasting impact while partnered with the Iraqi Security Forces by helping protect civil rights and deny a safe haven for terrorists.

"It has been the greatest privilege of the Brave Soldiers to serve along side our Iraqi brothers to help bring freedom and security to the people of western Ninevah," said Col. H.R. McMaster, commander, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment.

Ready First will add another chapter to their storied history, as they continue helping the Iraqi people build a better future. Their goals are to help the Iraqi citizens be at peace with their neighbors and have a representative government that respects the rights of all Iraqi people.

"No unit is better prepared to partner with the Iraqi Army and Police to help improve the internal security, economic security, and maintain infrastructure in western Ninevah," said Turner.

This marks the second time the Ready First has deployed to Iraq, the first time in 2003.

They now have an honorable and important mission which is to continue to bring security and stability to the citizens of the western Ninevah Province.

"This Brigade fought in the early part of this war, and we are proud to be back in Iraq to continue the mission during the critical period," said Col. Shawn McFarland, commander, 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division.

The Ready First now has the responsibility of training Iraqi Security Forces to defeat the insurgents, and keep the citizens in the western Ninevah Province safe.
