BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The 110th Wing is proud to announce a historic milestone as three Airmen from the wing, graduated from the U.S. Air Force Warrant Officer Training School (WOTS), Maxwell AFB, Alabama, on July 30, 2025, becoming the first Air Force warrant officers assigned to the 110th Wing in more than 66 years.
These warrant officers were a part of the Air Force’s fourth class since the program’s reintroduction in 2024, aligning the Air Force’s approach to bring back technical leaders in specialized career fields. While the first three classes included active-duty, Air National Guard, and Reserve members, this class was composed entirely of Air National Guard candidates. With their appointments, they are a part of the first 100 warrant officers in the U.S. Air Force and became the first to serve in this role within the Michigan Air National Guard.
The three newly appointed warrant officers, all assigned to the 272nd Cyber Operations Squadron, bring years of operational experience and technical leadership to their new roles. Chief Warrant Officer 2 Nicholas Colonna, formerly a senior network analyst and instructor, will now serve in the squadron’s Weapons and Tactics section. In his new role, he will lead the training pipeline and evaluation program. Warrant Officer Josh Brown transitioned from his prior role as a combat mission-ready cyber defense operations specialist and senior network analyst to lead the tactical employment of the Cyberspace Vulnerability Assessment/Hunter (CVA/H) weapon system in support of the Cyber Protection Team. Warrant Officer Luke Bunge, previously a cyber warfare operator and senior host analyst, will now lead the development of cyber tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) for the squadron’s cyber operations as part of the Weapons and Tactics team.
“After more than 60 years without warrant officers in the Air Force, it’s exciting to be part of their return,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Nicholas Colonna, 272nd COS, Michigan Air National Guard. “I’m honored to help lead this new chapter and energized by the challenges ahead—because they represent real opportunities to shape the future and prove that bringing warrant officers back was the right move.”
The 110th Wing and the Michigan Air National Guard are excited to welcome home these pioneering warrant officers as they assume their historic roles and continue to shape the future of cyberspace operations in the Air Force.
“These appointments reflect a renewed investment in deep technical expertise and long-term continuity within the Air Force’s cyber mission set,” said Col. James Rossi, 110 Wing Commander. “We are proud of our three warrant officers and look forward to their return to the 110th Wing, after the completion of this challenging and fast-paced course.”
