The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research – Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences invited the Surgeon General of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Commanding General of the AFP Medical Center to the Association of the United States Army Land Forces Pacific Symposium and Exhibition in May 2025 at Honolulu, Hawai’i.

The team from WRAIR-AFRIMS, led by director Col. Matthew Levine, and the AFP delegation joined representatives from more than 30 countries at LANPAC 2025. At the conference, WRAIR-AFRIMS introduced the AFP generals to leaders from across the Indo-Pacific theater.

“For over a decade, WRAIR-AFRIMS has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the Armed Forces of the Philippines — from our laboratories inside the Armed Forces of the Philippines Medical Center, their premier military hospital in Manila, to our support of major exercises like Balikatan,” said Col. Levine. “As we continue to learn from one another, we look for every opportunity to deepen interoperability and link the AFP to the broader Military Health System.”

The partnership with the AFP is crucial for WRAIR-AFRIMS-Philippines, a clinical trial site operated by WRAIR-AFRIMS in the Philippines for the research and development of vaccines for dengue, Zika, and other military-relevant disease threats.

“Our partnership with the AFP underpins everything we do at WRAIR-AFRIMS-Philippines, from advancing next-generation vaccines for dengue to strengthening regional medical readiness,” Col. Levine explained. “Attending LANPAC alongside Brig. Gen. Navarro and Brig. Gen. Dalaguit gave us the chance to forge relationships that will pay dividends for years to come. We’re proud to serve as a strategic enabler for the AFP, bridging them to partners across the Indo-Pacific and the global military health community.”

WRAIR-AFRIMS continues to support interoperability and partnership development in the Indo-Pacific theater. Specifically, WRAIR-AFRIMS plans to assist with the development of a medical skill exchange agreement between the AFP and the Hawai’i National Guard and will serve as a strategic enabler for the AFP Office of the Surgeon General.
