As the school year starts across Killeen Independent School District, Troopers assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division Artillery Brigade reflect on their meaningful engagement with the Maude Moore Wood Elementary School through the U.S. Army’s Adopt-A-School program and looking ahead to what it means for a strong safe return.
1st Cavalry Division Troopers volunteered more than 600 hours supporting the school’s students and staff over the last academic year. Troopers were a steady presence in the life of the school. They read with the students, helped during testing, assisted with special events, and more.
“The most important thing we did was show up,” said one Trooper who volunteered regularly. “Just being there, part of their routine, makes a difference.”
Troopers’ involvement helped create a positive and supportive atmosphere, reinforcing Army values and demonstrating what service looks like beyond the uniform.
1st Cavalry Division remains committed to supporting a positive and safe learning environment with safety always being a shared priority between schools, families, and the installation. Troopers often volunteer during arrival and dismissal or at significant events, contributing to the sense of safety, routine, and reassurance that helps schools run smoothly.
1st Cavalry Division plans to continue its support, reinforcing the importance of relationships, consistency, and community connection. As students return to school, back-to-school safety isn’t just about traffic patterns or protocols, it’s about having trusted adults present, supporting educators, and helping students start the year confident and cared for.
As 1st Cavalry Division, we look forward for this year, we remain dedicated to our mission and our community’s future. Building trust and strengthening our schools doesn’t follow the academic calendar, it’s a year-round mission.
