KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan National Security Forces captured 18 suspected insurgents, rescued two civilian hostages and seized weapons and bomb making material in the Malajat District of Kandahar City Aug. 9.

The Afghan-led mission into the heavily contested Malajat District of the city included several hours of heavy fighting.

Afghan forces discovered numerous large weapons caches and bomb making materials, said U.S. Army Col. Jeffrey Martindale, Commander, 1st Brigade Combat Team, Combined Team Kandahar City.

"The entire mission was planned and executed by the Afghan forces," said Martindale. "Coalition forces were present in a supporting role, but it was an entirely Afghan led mission that was very well executed."
