The Airman Leadership School Class 25-06 at Patrick Space Force Base, Florida, marked a historic achievement in professional development and joint force integration.
For the first time, the class included representation from every branch of the Department of Defense including the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard as well as a civilian student.
Among the graduates was the first-ever soldier to complete the ALS program at Patrick SFB’s Professional Development Center Schoolhouse, establishing a new precedent for inter-service collaboration and education on the Space Coast.
“Being part of a joint leadership course gave me valuable insight into how other branches operate, from intelligence and medical to engineering and combat,” said U.S. Army Specialist Sokai Saechao, 1st Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment indirect fire infantryman. “It offered a more personal perspective on why minimizing friction is so important in a joint force environment.”
ALS is a rigorous, foundational course designed to prepare Airmen and Guardians for their first official role as supervisors. The curriculum emphasizes key leadership competencies such as communication, trust-building, decision-making, teamwork, and the ethical responsibilities that come with wearing the uniform.
Students are challenged to grow not just as future leaders, but as mentors, role models, and professional representatives of their respective services.
While the course is rooted in Air Force and Space Force doctrine, the presence of service members from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard created a uniquely rich learning environment.
“Being in ALS alongside uniformed service members provided firsthand exposure to the values, structure, and expectations that guide enlisted leadership,” said Kyle Mallet, Space Launch Delta 45 sports program manager. “Engaging in conversations, team-building exercises, and shared learning with service members gave me a deeper appreciation for the discipline, camaraderie, and sense of duty that define military life. And now, knowing all of this will help me better support the mission.”
Each branch brings its own core values Honor, Courage, and Commitment from the Navy; Loyalty, Duty, Respect, and Selfless Service from the Army; Honor, Courage, and Commitment from the Marine Corps; and Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty from the Coast Guard. would it be better to put Honor, Courage and Commitment from the Navy and Marine Corps.
“The joint class experience highlighted the unique leadership cultures across every branch and showed me how collaboration strengthens the force,” said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class, Elijah Peek, Maritime Force Protection Unit Kings Bay gunners mate. “Coming from the Department of Homeland Security, it was eye-opening to see how our distinct mission still aligns with the broader goals of national defense.”
By embracing these diverse perspectives, Class 25-06 exemplified what it means to be part of a modern, integrated force. Students didn't just learn how to lead within their own branches, they learned how to lead in a joint environment, where cooperation, communication, and shared purpose are essential to mission success.
