FORT BUCHANAN, PUERTO RICO – Col. John D. Samples, Fort Buchanan commander, and Command Sgt.Maj. Kimberly D. Bergman-Gándara, the installation's command sergeant major, welcomed the members of the Canada-United States Army Reserve General Officers Advisory Board (GOAB) 2025, Aug. 5 at the command headquarters.

“Welcome to Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico. We are home to the Army National Guard, the Army Reserve, the U.S. Marines, and the Navy Reserve, and we have an incredible partnership with our Coast Guard teammates, as well as federal agencies across Puerto Rico. All our tenants on the installation work as one team to ensure the readiness of our warfighters. To that effect we have an Engagement Skills Trainer (EST) II and a Mobile Marksmanship Training Simulator (MMTS) that we take to the warfighters wherever they are. But we don't stop there; we are actively working to expand our training capabilities on-post. At Fort Buchanan We are not taking a day off to enable the readiness of the warfighter,” said Samples.

Meanwhile, Bergman-Gándara highlighted the strategic location of the installation.

“In Puerto Rico, we are the United States’ southernmost border, and at Fort Buchanan, we take that very seriously in everything we do to sustain the readiness of the force,” Bergman-Gándara said.

Under the theme “Building Combat Ready Formations and Units,” GOAB 2025 includes roundtable discussions and the opportunity to observe the 1st Mission Support Command's Exercise Caribbean Thunder, which showcases collective training and soldier readiness in the region.

Fort Buchanan supports a military community of approximately 15,000 personnel, including active-duty members, reservists, Puerto Rico National Guard members, and Marine Corps and Navy Reserve units. With an annual budget exceeding $500 million, the installation's mission focuses on enhancing readiness and enabling the deployment of military personnel whenever and wherever needed.
