SAN DIEGO, Calif. – U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Steven J. Butow, along with Airmen, family and friends, welcomed Col. Christopher T. “CJ” Johnson as the new commander of the 195th Wing, during his Assumption of Command ceremony held August 2, 2025, at San Diego Air National Guard Station, California.
Col. Johnson communicated his leadership priorities while addressing 195th Wing Airmen during their monthly unit training assembly and at the Senior Leader Conference held at the 147th Combat Communications Squadron base the same weekend, emphasizing mission command at all levels, rapid action, and integrated engagement as guiding principles to help shape the wing’s path forward as it prepares to meet future operational challenges.
The 195th Wing’s mission within the California Air National Guard and nationally is to utilize cutting-edge technology and unparalleled expertise to provide critical information, electromagnetic effects, and secure networks while cultivating strategic partnerships and applying innovative strategies to remain relevant in an ever-changing operational landscape.
The 195th Wing is equipped with niche Airmen that provide intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, combat communications, space operations, cyberspace operations, and electromagnetic warfare.
And, while the 195th Wing prepares to add the delivery of non-kinetic effects to its list of capabilities to further strengthen the nation’s national security posture, Johnson encouraged Airmen to actively pursue capacity building opportunities and emphasized more leadership support for their value adding efforts. “We have a strong legacy of being expeditionary, forward-deploying, and getting stuff done. These characteristics are embedded in our organizational DNA. The common thread is simple: we move forward.”
Johnson entered the Regular Air Force on active duty in 2002 after commissioning from AFROTC at Washington State University. He is a career warfighting networks officer and Sub-Saharan Africa Foreign Affairs Officer. His staff tours include USAFE, SAF/IA, Joint Planning Support Element, Joint Staff J5 Africa, Special Operations Command Central, Space Systems Command (SSC), and HQ Space Force.
He has served as a Senior Individual Mobilization Augmentee (IMA) at SSC, Los Angeles Air Force Base, Calif. He also previously served as the IMA to the Commander of Air Force District of Washington. Prior to this assignment, Col. Johnson served as the commander of the 195th Operations Group at Sepulveda Air National Guard Station, California.
