The 181st Civil Engineering Squadron concluded their annual training at Ebbing Air National Guard Base, Arkansas July 21-August 1.
With support from the 188th CES and their cadre, who provided expert guidance and access to their classroom facilities, equipment and training grounds. During the first week, the 181st CES covered refresher courses designed to prepare Airmen for combat scenarios, reinforce safety protocols and strengthen technical expertise through shop-specific projects. In the second week, Airmen honed their versatility in multi-capable roles and executed a full-scale simulation of a Rapid Airfield Damage Repair operation.
RADR is a vital capability that enables quick restoration of airfield operations following enemy attacks or natural disasters, ensuring uninterrupted airpower projection. This mission-critical process is executed by an integrated team made up of Civil Engineering and Explosive Ordnance Disposal who work jointly to assess damage, clear hazards, repair craters and return runways to an operational status.
“The Air Force projects power from its air bases. Enemies understand this and will likely attack our runways and infrastructure,” said Maj. Dodson, commander of the 181st CES. “Rapid Airfield Damage Repair in an airbase recovery scenario is critical to giving combatant commanders the ability to project air power by launching and recovering aircraft in an expedited manner after an attack.”
The RADR exercise combined the squadron’s skill sets, emphasizing teamwork, adaptability, and mission readiness. Airmen were challenged by being put into roles outside their primary specialties, gaining exposure to a range of tasks they wouldn’t normally perform.
“This event is a perfect ‘mission over function’ training opportunity that uses all Civil Engineering AFSC’s [Air Force Specialty Code] to get hands-on experiences and further develop our multi-capable Airmen,” said Chief Master Sgt. Coldiron, senior enlisted leader of the 181st CES. “It puts multiple real-world scenarios in action, helped grow our Airmen both professionally and personally and helped them understand we all stand together. One team, one fight.”
