U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Darin Via, Navy Surgeon General and Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery visited Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) San Diego on July 24, 2025. The visit included an all hands-call and a tour of NMRTC San Diego facilities to engage with Navy personnel.
During the all-hands call, Via recognized the contributions of individual sailors by presenting them with Admiral’s coins in front of a packed auditorium. In his remarks, Via expressed gratitude to all the Sailors and staff of NMRTC for their dedication to the mission of providing world-class health care to veterans, service members and their families, contributing to American warfighting capability by maintaining fleet readiness.
“Not only thanks for what you all do every day, but truly, thank you to each of you who are obviously aligned to what is the purpose of the MHS [Military Health System],” Via said. “I can see it here: the pride within Navy medicine in what we do every day. We are, in my opinion, as integrated as we’ve ever been with our operational forces.”
Via toured various departments, engaging directly with frontline Navy personnel. He took questions from staff to assess the needs of medical providers on the ground and discussed efforts at the highest levels to ensure that Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) continues to provide the safest, highest quality patient-centered medical care for our veterans, service members and their families.
The mission of NMRTC San Diego is comprised predominantly of military members who support NMCSD. The command supports overall Navy and Marine Corps readiness by training military command members to ensure they are ready to deploy and provide medical support to various operational Navy and Marine units deployed, ashore or at sea.
For 20 years, Navy medicine--represented by more than 44,000 highly-trained military and civilian healthcare professionals--has delivered quality healthcare and enduring expeditionary medical support to the warfighter on, below, and above the sea, and ashore.
