NATO defense ministers meeting in Portoroz, Slovenia, have approved the expansion of responsibility for the alliance's International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan to include the eastern portion of the country. ISAF already exercises opertional control in the country's other three regions.
James Appathurai, NATO spokesman, said the transfer of authority from the coalition to ISAF would take place in the coming weeks.
NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer is expected to provide further details at a news conference later today.
