Iraqi security forces captured 16 suspected terrorists yesterday, and a Dec. 9 air strike killed two others, military officials in Iraq reported.
In Fallujah yesterday, 1st Iraqi Army Division forces, with coalition advisors, conducted operations against insurgent cell leaders, capturing four suspected terrorists. The insurgent cells are responsible for improvised-explosive-device, car-bomb and mortar attacks against Iraqi security and coalition forces in the area, officials said. The suspects also are linked to criminal activity in the area. One of the detained men is suspected of being a weapons smuggler for anti-government forces operating in and around Fallujah.
Special Iraqi police forces with coalition advisors conducted operations against insurgents yesterday in the village of Khasraj, near Hit, capturing six suspected terrorists.
The area around Kasraj is a known insurgent operating area, officials said. Insurgent activities in the area include mortar and other attacks against coalition forces, attacks against Iraqis assisting coalition forces and criminal activity that funds insurgent operations.
Iraqi police entered a mosque suspected of being a meeting place for insurgents during the operation. No damage was caused to the mosque, officials said.
In Baghdad’s Hadar neighborhood yesterday, members of the 1st Battalion, 6th Iraqi National Police Brigade, and 1st Battalion, 14th Cavalry Regiment, seized two weapons caches and detained six men suspected of committing sectarian murders and emplacing roadside bombs. The early morning operation began with the establishment of an outer security perimeter by coalition forces while national police entered several homes and the Al Sahaby Mosque in search of the men and possible weapons caches.
The national police seized two weapons caches containing assault rifles, a roadside bomb, a bulletproof vest, assorted small-arms ammunition and bomb-making materials. One of the weapons seized was a rifle fitted with a sniper scope, laser sight and modified to accept a sound suppressor. The six suspects are being held for questioning.
Elsewhere, coalition forces saw insurgents detonating an improvised explosive device Dec. 9 in Ramadi. Coalition forces engaged the enemy with aircraft gunfire and a precision-guided munition. The strikes killed two insurgents and wounded two others.
