A 56-year-old detainee died Jan. 7 of complications from an apparent stroke at Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad, military officials reported today.
The detainee was admitted to 344th Medical Task Force Dec. 30 and was being treated for an irregular heartbeat. An attending physician pronounced him dead after he failed to respond to aggressive medical treatment, officials said.
The 344th, a National Guard unit from Fort Totten, N.Y., provides medical care to all security detainees at Abu Ghraib. The unit underwent a weeklong training course specializing in confinement facility healthcare before deploying to Iraq.
The detainee's remains will be transferred to his family upon completion of an autopsy, and the military Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the incident - standard procedures when a detainee dies in Multinational Force Iraq custody, officials said.
