U.S. military medical personnel treated 22 Afghans injured in a suicide bombing Jan. 5 in the southern Afghanistan city of Tarin Kowt, military officials in Afghanistan reported today.

Eight wounded Afghans were taken to Kandahar Airfield and two others were moved to Bagram Airfield for treatment.

The remaining 12 injured people were treated at a nearby forward operating base. Four of those were held overnight for observation, and six were treated and released. All are in stable condition.

"Our medical professionals worked very hard in their efforts to provide the best care to those who needed it most," said Col. Richard Trotta, Combined Joint Task Force 76 surgeon. "Our healthcare team worked tirelessly to ensure that those who most needed the treatment were able to receive it."

U.S. forces routinely provide medical care to Afghans for illness and injury. In the past year, U.S. forces have performed more than 100 medical evacuations, flying more than 500 Afghans to U.S. facilities for medical treatment.
