Naval Medical Center San Diego’s Pharmacy Supply Leading Petty Officer Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Roger Lee, has been selected to attend the Medical Service Corps In-Service Procurement Program for the pharmacy program.
MSC IPP is a way for Sailors in pay grades E-5 through E-9 that are career minded to become a commissioned officer in the Medical Service Corps.
Lee, 37, of Middletown, N.Y., joined the Navy in March 2007 because he wanted a change in his professional and personal life. Before joining the Navy, Lee worked in the medical field running a sleep clinic as the lead technician for sleep disorder studies. Lee felt that by joining the Navy, he would be able to travel and work in new places, then eventually go back to school with the help of the G.I. Bill and settle into a different career.
Since completing boot camp, Hospital Corpsman school, and reporting to NMCSD, he set his sights on getting commissioned as a Naval officer.
“Getting my pharmacy degree is something that has always been in the back of my mind because I have a couple of family members in the medical field already, and I got my bachelors degree in biology a long time ago,” said Lee.
In July, Lee reported to Mercer University in Atlanta where his full time job will be working towards his four-year pharmacy degree. Lee credits his dream of becoming a pharmacist into reality to the leadership of the officers and senior enlisted at NMCSD.
“I think my leadership gave me all the support needed to go through this program. Before hand, I knew I wanted to further my education, but I just wasn’t motivated enough,” said Lee.
The Pharmacy Department helped Lee by providing guidance and information about programs like MCS IPP that fostered his career goals while serving in the Navy and beyond.
“Lee is a leader. He is well grounded with a very positive attitude and is grateful to be in the Navy,” said Chief Hospital Corpsman Ernesto Calvillo, Lee’s leading chief petty officer.
“The G.I. Bill alone is a wonderful program for a lot of people. The MSC IPP on the other hand, ups it by several times over,” said Lee. “I think it’s an excellent program and I’m very fortunate and honored to go through it.”
The Navy Medical Service Corps was established Aug. 4, 1947. At that time, MSC offered degrees and training specializing in Supply and Administration, Optometry, Allied Sciences and Pharmacy. Now, celebrating its 63rd birthday, there are more than 20 different programs.
