Stars and Stripes, the daily newspaper of the U.S. military, will publish a "Heroes" supplement on June 14, Flag Day, to honor those who have fought in the global war on terror.
The supplement will appear in the editions published by Stars and Stripes in the European, Pacific and Middle East theaters, and also is appearing this month in many U.S. military base newspapers and at key outlets in the nation's capital.
Circulation of "Heroes" is expected to be about 500,000. Usually confining its distribution to the overseas military market, Stars and Stripes is making a concerted effort to expand the distribution of this, officials said.
The supplement will be delivered to Capitol Hill, where House and Senate members will receive a number of hand-delivered issues; along the "Power Corridor," where it will be circulated to lobbyist groups, and to the K Street business community. Print and broadcast media outlets also will receive it.
Included in the supplement will be vignettes featuring a sampling of stories from those receiving medals of valor for their actions in combat.
"This special section will give well-deserved recognition to the many, many servicemembers who have distinguished themselves while serving in harm's way," said Dave Mazzarella, Stars and Stripes editorial director.
"In developing this project, the staff at S&S recognized that all of the servicemen and women serving in the Middle East are placing themselves in harm's way every day - and we wanted to recognize those efforts," said Max D. Lederer Jr., the paper's chief operating officer. "The Heroes product is a collection of some of the many noteworthy accomplishments of our forces. A great number of those who have served or are serving in the Middle East are either regularly stationed in the United States or are part of the Reserves and National Guard.
"This makes it doubly important to us that Stars and Stripes provide a piece that is as noteworthy as the contributions made by our men and women in uniform and their families," he said.
Following its publication in print, the supplement will be posted online, as a downloadable PDF file, at the Stars and Stripes Web site.
