Two Iraqi civilians died today when a coalition forces truck and an Iraqi civilian vehicle collided near Khalis in Iraq's Diyala province, military officials in Baghdad reported.
The civilians, including a child, were killed when their vehicle caught fire after it swerved into a Bradley fighting vehicle. In other news from Iraq, a group of Iraqis saw two terrorists emplacing a roadside bomb along a route in New Baghdad June 2 and alerted Iraqi police to the danger, saving countless lives, military officials in Baghdad reported today.
A joint patrol of Iraqi police and elements of 1st Battalion, 64th Armor, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, arrived at the scene within half an hour. The citizens pointed to the location of the improvised explosive device.
The U.S. soldiers and Iraqi police secured the area as an explosive ordnance disposal team was called in to safely destroy the IED.
"The Iraqi local residents involved in this are heroes," said Maj. Russ Goemaere, 2nd BCT spokesperson. "They observed a danger to their friends and community, and they took decisive action."
In other news, a June 2 car bomb explosion in south Baghdad resulted in the arrest of three people responsible for the blast. Iraqi police report the only fatality in the attack was an occupant of the vehicle-borne improvised explosive device. One wounded policeman was treated at a local hospital.
Three suspected terrorists fled the scene after the explosion, according to Iraqi police. All three were quickly captured by the police and taken to the Bayaa station. The incident is being investigated.
The terrorists "failed to carry out their mission of disrupting the lives of Baghdad citizens," said Lt. Col. Clifford Kent, Task Force Baghdad spokesman. "The prevention of these potentially deadly attacks continues to succeed thanks to the increased vigilance by Iraqi police, Iraqi army soldiers and Iraqi citizens."
Just before midnight on June 1, an Iraqi civilian walked into a police station and told the officers he'd seen men in a white Mazda hiding what looked like bombs near the side of a road in northwest Baghdad.
The police investigated and found two artillery rounds at the location identified by the tipster. An Iraqi bomb squad confiscated the munitions.
Earlier that evening, an Iraqi child told Task Force Baghdad soldiers about something sticking out of the ground. The U.S. soldiers searched the site and found a mortar round. A team of explosives experts safely detonated the bomb.
"This is the second time in two days we've had ordinary Iraqis step forward to thwart potential terrorist attacks," said Kent. "It just goes to show that a lot more people want to rebuild Iraq than want to tear it apart."
Iraqi soldiers and coalition forces captured 29 terror suspects, including three targeted for their involvement in terror cells, during a series of recent raids throughout Baghdad. Weapons, passports and bomb-making materials were also seized.
The largest of the raids took place in the Karb De Gla district in southern Baghdad, and netted 18 suspects, including two of the three targeted terrorists, as well as Iraqi military uniforms and bomb-making materials.
