Two soldiers assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), were killed in action June 1 while conducting combat operations near Ramadi, Iraq, military officials reported today.
One soldier was hit by enemy small-arms fire during the operation. The second soldier was killed in action when an improvised explosive device detonated near the vehicle in which he was traveling.
The 2nd BCT is a U.S. Army unit assigned to the 2nd MEF in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Also on June 1, a Task Force Liberty soldier died in Kirkuk from a non-battle-related injury, officials reported.
The soldiers' names are being withheld pending notification of their families. Elsewhere in Iraq, near the village of Mushada, northwest of Baghdad, an Iraqi civilian was killed and another was wounded by a suicide car bomb in the early-morning hours of June 1.
One man was pronounced dead minutes after the attack, and a second man was evacuated for medical treatment. A third Iraqi man was pronounced dead at the scene, and preliminary reports indicate that he may have been involved in the attack. Officials said the suicide bomber attempted to attack a U.S. convoy traveling north on the highway. As the bomber approached the convoy, he detonated his vehicle.
No American soldiers were wounded or killed in the attack.
