One Task Force Liberty soldier was killed by an improvised explosive device at about 10 a.m. July 17 near Balad, Iraq, military officials in Iraq reported.
Two other soldiers were wounded and taken to a coalition forces medical facility.
The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Elsewhere in Iraq, a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated at the eastern end of the Karradah peninsula at 11 a.m. July 17, killing three Iraqi police officers and one Iraqi civilian and wounding one police officer and nine civilians.
The blast knocked down an electric pole, along with the power lines, and damaged the water main in the neighborhood. The windows of more than 15 houses in the neighborhood were also shattered during the explosion.
The Ministry of the Interior is aggressively working to repair the damage so that electricity will be quickly and safely restored to local residents, an official said in a statement.
In other developments, Task Force Liberty soldiers detained one individual in Samarra after an improvised explosive device detonated in front of their combat patrol today.
During a search of the area, the patrol discovered wires running up to the roof of a nearby house and found the individual and two motorcycle batteries on the roof. The suspect was taken to a coalition base for questioning. No task force soldiers were injured in the incident, officials said.
In other news from Iraq, coordinated efforts of Iraqi security forces and multinational forces from Task Force Freedom are leading to the arrest of terrorists and criminals responsible for attacks against innocent Iraqi citizens.
Combined forces seized a large weapons cache, detained eight suspected terrorists, and killed five terrorists during operations in northern Iraq July 17 and 18.
Iraqi police, with the support of U.S. soldiers from 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, seized a large weapons cache during a raid in western Mosul. The cache consisted of more than 1,000 mortar rounds, more than 25 mortar firing systems, 150 rockets, 450 rocket-propelled-grenade rounds, 26 RPG launchers, numerous missile firing systems, shape charges, improvised explosive devices and more than 30 assorted rifles. The weapons were confiscated for future destruction.
In a separate operation today, Iraqi police and soldiers from the 1-24th detained two individuals suspected of terrorist activity during a raid operation in western Mosul. Suspects are in custody with no coalition or Iraqi injuries reported.
Soldiers from the 1-24th killed one terrorist and detained five other suspected terrorists during two raids today. Members of the unit killed the terrorist after being attacked with small-arms fire during one of the operations.
Soldiers from 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment killed four terrorists who were setting up a mortar attack in Tal Afar July 17. Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, detained one individual suspected of terrorist activity during a cordon-and-search operation today in eastern Mosul.
Elsewhere, combined forces detained eight suspected terrorists during operations today in northern Iraq.
Iraqi army soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, detained three individuals after being attacked with small-arms fire in northern Mosul.
U.S. soldiers from 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, detained four individuals suspected of terrorist activity during a reconnaissance operation in Tal Afar. Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, detained one individual suspected of terrorist activity during a raid in western Mosul.
And in solo actions, Iraqi soldiers continued with Operation Veterans Forward and captured several terrorists and caches in raids throughout Tal Afar today, according to a multinational forces report.
Soldiers from the 1st Brigade, 3rd Iraqi Army Division, captured numerous insurgents and discovered several weapons caches in the city on July 17. Two suspected IED triggermen, believed to have injured a local man, were captured. In the western part of the city, six men were detained after their home was raided and over 300 artillery rounds were discovered. Local citizens aided the soldiers in removing the rounds from the building, which were later destroyed.
In the nearby village of Zagaytan, Iraqi police discovered a collection of IED-making materials, ranging from rigged cell phones to crude explosives and blasting caps.
