Two U.S. soldiers were killed in Iraq in the last two days.
A Task Force Baghdad soldier died when his patrol struck an improvised explosive device in southwest Baghdad on Aug. 16.
On Aug. 15, a Task Force Freedom soldier was killed by gunfire while conducting security operations in central Mosul. Terrorists employed small-arms fire as they drove by his position in a civilian vehicle.
Terrorists also attacked a Task Force Baghdad patrol in central Baghdad on Aug. 16. In the ensuing fight, U.S. helicopters tracked and engaged the terrorists, and resulted in an undetermined number of civilian casualties.
Multinational Force Iraq officials expressed regret over any civilian loss of life or injuries.
In other news from Iraq, a mechanical problem forced a Task Force Baghdad helicopter to make a precautionary landing in southwest Baghdad Aug. 17.
Multinational Division Baghdad units quickly responded to safeguard the site and provide support. The crew reported no enemy contact at the time of the landing. Initial reports indicate no U.S. soldiers were injured in the landing.
While conducting searches in two locales Aug. 16, Iraqi and coalition forces found weapons and detained several suspects.
During a cordon-and-search operation in Suwayrah, Iraqi army soldiers stopped a vehicle containing three improvised explosive devices.
Soldiers with 2nd Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 8th Iraqi Army Division, noticed a suspicious vehicle while on patrol and directed it to stop near a checkpoint. Once the vehicle came to a stop, the passengers immediately fled and managed to escape. The soldiers found three artillery shells with electrical detonators in the car.
Elsewhere, Iraqi army soldiers and coalition forces conducted successful search operations against suspected insurgents in Avghani.
Soldiers with 1st and 2nd Battalions, 2nd Brigade, 2nd Iraqi Army Division, and coalition forces detained 17 suspected insurgents, five of whom appeared on a coalition wanted list. Soldiers also confiscated 22 AK-47 automatic rifles and four pistols during the operation.
No injuries or damages were reported in either action.
In the air over Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 49 close-air support and armed reconnaissance sorties Aug. 16. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities, and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Coalition aircraft also supported Iraqi and coalition ground operations to create a secure environment for ongoing Transitional National Assembly meetings.
U.S. Air Force F-16s and U.S. Navy F/A-18s provided close air support to coalition troops in the vicinities of Muqdadiyah, Balad, Baqubah, Bayji and Samarra.
Eleven U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy and Royal Australian Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. U.S. Air Force and Royal Air Force fighter aircraft also performed in a nontraditional ISR role with electro-optical and infrared sensors.
