A soldier assigned to 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), was killed in action Sept. 27 by small-arms fire while conducting combat operations in Ramadi, Iraq, military officials reported today.
The soldier's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
In other news from Iraq, Iraqi officers from the 1st Battalion, 1st Public Order Brigade, detained an insurgent after he fired on them with a pistol Sept. 27 in Fallujah, Iraq, military officials reported.
The officers returned fire and incapacitated the terrorist. The attacker was captured and evacuated for medical treatment for two gunshot wounds to the upper right arm.
Elsewhere, Iraqi security forces found and cleared an improvised explosive device Sept. 27 in Balad.
Iraqi army personnel detected the threat during a routine patrol. Further searching yielded a wire running from the roadside to the edge of a nearby river. Troops later found a 130 mm artillery round hidden in a storage shed.
Authorities think the IED was being emplaced when the troops first arrived in the area. An Iraqi explosive ordnance detachment later cleared the bomb.
In other developments, Iraqi army and coalition troops conducted a joint raid and netted a weapons cache Sept. 27 south of Muqdadiyah.
Troops from the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 5th Iraqi Army Division, were operating with coalition forces in a time-sensitive raid to kill or capture terrorists when they happened upon the stashed weaponry.
An inventory of the cache produced one rocket-propelled-grenade launcher, one sniper rifle, one mortar system, 11 mortar rounds, two grenades and an assortment of small-arms ammunition.
No people were detained in connection with the cache.
