Enemy forces killed an American soldier and an Afghan National Army soldier during fighting north of Kandahar, Afghanistan, Sept. 30, Combined Forces Command Afghanistan officials said today.

One U.S. soldier and two Afghan National Army soldiers were also wounded in the small-arms and rocket-propelled-grenade attack. All three were evacuated to a nearby forward operating base for treatment.

"This soldier, alongside his Afghan National Army counterpart, paid the ultimate price for Afghanistan and for freedom," said Army Command Sgt. Maj. Iuniasolua Savusa, Combined Joint Task Force 76 command sergeant major. "Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they continue their dangerous mission of bringing the fight to the enemies of this proud nation."

The name and unit of the deceased soldier are being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.
