Car Bombs Kill at Least 5 Near Mosque, Police Station

Iraqi security forces and Task Force Baghdad soldiers responded to the scene of a terrorist attack today in Adhamiyah, Iraq, a district in northeastern Baghdad.

Initial reports indicate at least five Iraqi citizens were killed and 25 were wounded when two car bombs went off near the Shab Iraqi police station and the adjacent Sharoofi Mosque. Also near Baghdad today, a Task Force Baghdad convoy survived a suicide car-bomb attack. One U.S. soldier with minor injuries was evacuated to a nearby military treatment facility.

An explosives ordnance disposal team investigating the terrorist attack on a road north of the city determined the driver was traveling in a northbound lane before crossing the median and detonating near the southbound military convoy. In other news from Iraq, Iraqi security forces working with U.S. soldiers from 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery, conducted a two-part operation to capture terrorists and search for illegal weapons in Zafaraniya on Nov. 6 and today. Iraqi police officers assisted by searching homes and interviewing residents in both operations.

Four suspected terrorists were detained in Operation Slap Shot Nov. 6. The men are suspected of involvement with a terrorist group notorious for kidnappings and executions. The first detainee is a suspected operative of that group and also is suspected of plotting kidnappings.

His brother also was detained as part of the operation. The other two detainees are also suspected members of that same group.

U.S. soldiers conducted Operation Fast Break today, resulting in the seizure of illegal ammunition. The Iraqi 2nd Public Order Brigade played a major role in the operation's execution.

"The 2nd Public Order Brigade is increasing in efficiency and effectiveness every day - they grow with each mission they conduct," a military official said. "Operationally they do very well, and today was a fine example."

During the early-morning mission, soldiers spoke with residents of a neighborhood primarily housing disabled veterans of the Iran-Iraq war.

"I think we made some friends today," said Army 1st Lt. Clements Gover, B Battery, 1/9 FA platoon leader. "People responded really well to our presence and that of the Public Order Brigade officers we were with."

Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 1st Iraqi Army Division, partnered with the Marines from Regimental Combat Team 8, discovered a weapons cache and detained six terrorists during cordon-and-search operations in northeast Fallujah early today. The weapons captured included 30 mortar rounds of various sizes, bomb-making material including cordless phones and cell phones used to remotely detonate roadside bombs, a significant amount of wire, propaganda-producing equipment with multiple audio and video tapes, and small arms. The small arms discovered included rocket launchers, about 500 rounds of ammunition and 23 grenades. A suicide vest and plastic explosives also were found in the cache. The weapons were destroyed in a controlled detonation near the site. Iraqi army soldiers and U.S. forces continue to capture weapons, bomb-making material and propaganda material from the insurgency. Iraqi soldiers detained five men in four separate incidents in Samarra and Fallujah on Nov. 8.

Soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, 1st Brigade, 5th Iraqi Army Division, approached the vehicle, and the gunmen chambered rounds in their rifles. Troops detained the men before any shots were fired.

In Fallujah, Iraqi soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 1st Iraqi Intervention Force, detained a man at an entry-control point to the city when he attempted to use a fake Iraqi police identification card. The man was also making statements about attacking Iraqi security forces within the city.

Later that day, troops from the 3rd Battalion, 4th Brigade, 1st Iraqi Intervention Force, detained two military-aged males southwest of Fallujah when they acted suspiciously after being stopped for questioning. The men were driving a car riddled with bullet holes.

All detainees have been turned over to authorities.

Second Brigade Combat Team soldiers from Task Force 2-69 Armor captured a high-level terrorist leader while conducting combat patrols in eastern Ramadi early Nov. 5.

Majid Adnon Swedowi and five other individuals were captured when the patrol conducted a hasty cordon-and-search operation on a home suspected of harboring the terrorist leader.

Swedowi was the head of a terrorist network in Ramadi that conducted attacks against coalition forces, which included emplacing roadside bombs in and around the city. He also was involved in kidnapping and extortion.

Swedowi is the second high-level terrorist leader captured by the 2nd Brigade Combat Team in the past week. Issa Daham Abed al-Julilbawi was captured Nov. 1 in western Ramadi.

Swedowi remains in the custody of coalition Forces.
