Task Force Baghdad soldiers discovered three improvised explosive devices while patrolling the streets of the Iraqi capital early today and late last night.

The first IED was uncovered in western Baghdad at about 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 27 by a patrol from the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division. Unit troops noticed a small box with black tape and a flashlight attached to it.

An hour later, another 10th Mountain Division unit patrolling western Baghdad uncovered a second device. Members of the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, discovered a 120 mm artillery round wired for detonation on a main road.

A third IED was uncovered in northern Baghdad at about 4 a.m. today. This device was also a 120 mm round wired for detonation.

All the devices were destroyed in place.

Task Force Baghdad soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, continued excavating an ammunition site near the town of Latifiyah in the north Babil region, just south of Baghdad. The Jan. 27 find yielded a cache loaded with hundreds of mortar rounds and other explosive material.

So far troops reported uncovering the following:

"When we uncover these explosives, we take them out of the hands of the insurgent," said Maj. Philip Smith, deputy public affairs officer with the 1st Cavalry Division.

"We're saving lives with every cache we find."

Multinational forces from 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), discovered another weapons cache in northern Iraq Jan. 27. Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, located the cache, which included propellant sticks, mortar rounds and other weapons, mortar fuses, grenades and ammunition.
