A U.S. Army Bradley fighting vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in southwestern Baghdad, Iraq, today, killing two soldiers and wounding four.
The wounded Task Force Baghdad soldiers were taken to a military medical facility, officials said. No report was available on their condition.
The attack marks the second time within a week that buried explosives have killed soldiers and wrecked one of the tracked infantry carriers in Iraq. Another Bradley, patrolling the northwestern Baghdad area, struck an IED Jan. 6, killing seven soldiers and destroying the vehicle.
Insurgents in Iraq have been using roadside bombs to attack and harass U.S., coalition and Iraqi forces' patrols and to disrupt supply convoys.
In western Anbar Province, a U.S. Marine with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force was killed Jan. 9 while on patrol. No further details were available.
In other news from Baghdad, insurgents today shot and killed the city's deputy police chief and his son, officials said. And, a suicide car bomb detonated at a police station in southern Baghdad today, killing four Iraqi police officers.
Two Iraqi army soldiers were killed and one was wounded Jan. 10 during a joint patrol with U.S. 1st Infantry Division soldiers near Samarra after the group encountered an insurgent IED and small-arms fire. Two American soldiers were wounded in the exhange. The insurgent group departed after the Iraqi-U.S. patrol returned fire.
U.S. and Iraqi troops have boosted their presence in northern Iraq to enhance election-day security, with reinforcements having arrived in the city of Mosul.
As part of ratcheting up the pressure on insurgents in northern Iraq, Multinational Force officials reported, U.S. troops collected nine people suspected of anti-government activities during a raid today in Mosul and detained five others in a Jan. 9 raid south of the city. The raids also yielded numerous enemy weapons and munitions.
In a separate Jan. 9 raid, this one in Kirkuk, multinational forces captured two suspected insurgents.
In other news, U.S. soldiers and Iraqi army troops detained one individual at a traffic checkpoint near the town of Tawahla Jan. 9 after prohibited weapons were found in the engine compartment of the person's vehicle. The search yielded a sniper rifle, a scope, a magazine and ammunition.
Iraqi soldiers detained two suspected insurgents during two Jan. 9 raids conducted near Samarra.
U.S. soldiers with Task Force Danger captured two people Jan. 9 during a raid conducted near Dujayl. The detainees were taken to Multinational Force authorities for additional questioning.
