    1 U.S. Soldier Killed, 2 Wounded in Baghdad IED Attack

    An improvised explosive device killed one soldier and wounded two others in western Baghdad today.

    The soldiers are part of Task Force Baghdad. No other information was available.

    A suspected insurgent was killed south of Baqubah today when the IED he was preparing exploded prematurely.

    Officials noted 1st Infantry Division attack helicopters surprised him while he was working with the IED. The incident is under investigation.

    Marines and Iraqi security forces south of Baghdad continue an operation that has detained almost 600 suspected insurgents since it began five months ago, officials in Iraq said. In the most recent move, Marines rounded up 21 suspects in raids near Yusufiyah, while Iraqi police captured 13 suspects near Haswah.

    The Marines part of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit also detained suspects near Jurf as Sakr and Mahmudiyah. The sweeps occurred Dec. 22.

    In Mahmudiyah, Marines are helping Iraqi police investigate the explosion of a gasoline truck. There were no reports of casualties.

    Soldiers and Marines continue to find arms caches even as more arms are being smuggled into the nation, Pentagon officials said. In western Iraq, Navy explosive ordnance disposal specialists have foiled 33 improvised explosive device attacks.

    The team also has destroyed more than 1,000 pieces of ordnance and conducted more than 100 controlled detonations that destroyed weapons and munitions.
