A U.S. Marine assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force was killed in action Dec. 16 in Anbar province during security and stabilization operations.
Officials are withholding the individual's name until next of kin are notified.
In other news, combined efforts of the Iraqi police, Iraqi National Guardsmen and multinational forces uncovered a weapons cache in a Sadr City junkyard Dec. 15. Police acted on information from a local citizen, who had tipped them about a possible improvised explosive device in the street near the junkyard.
Iraqi police and guardsmen as well as troops from Task Force 2-5 Cavalry searched nearby areas after the Iraqi security forces had found the IED and discovered the junkyard cache.
"Without the Iraqi police and ING, we could not have been able to identify all of the hidden weapon locations in the junkyard," said task force soldier Sgt. 1st Class Clifford Owens.
The find yielded four AK-47 assault rifles, a rocket-propelled-grenade launcher, 18 mortars, three bundles of TNT, five already made IEDs, three sets of body armor, 200 charging fuses and a rocket.
