Two pilots were injured today when their Army OH- 58 Kiowa Warrior scout helicopter crashed just north of Shindand, in Afghanistan's Herat province.
Combined Forces Command Afghanistan officials said the crash site was secured immediately and no enemy forces were reported in the area.
"This crash was not the result of any hostile action," a written statement from the command read, "and according to the pilots, there was no fire reported from the ground."
The pilots were taken to a nearby U.S. medical facility with injuries officials described as "not life threatening."
An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the crash, officials said.
In other news from Afghanistan, The Tripartite Commission, composed of senior military and diplomatic representatives from Afghanistan, Pakistan and the United States, held its ninth meeting in Kabul today. It was the U.S. delegation's turn to host the latest periodic exchange of the commission.
Delegations agreed on the commission's significant accomplishments in improving coordination and information sharing among the participants. The parties agreed they should continue efforts to further enhance cooperation, including during forthcoming elections in Afghanistan.
The parties highlighted specific examples of improved cooperation, including during the Afghan presidential election, as well as marked enhancements in communications among commanders at all levels. The parties also noted favorably the intensified interaction among high-level officials, including regular contacts between top leaders at the ministerial level and above.
During this plenary session, the parties discussed forming a Counter Narcotics Working Group. The parties see such a working group as an important mechanism to deepen cooperation in order to limit the production and trafficking of dangerous drugs in and through the region, an official statement read.
The Pakistani delegation reviewed operations in that country's federally administered tribal areas, confirming that counterterrorism operations there continue. The Afghan delegation briefed on deployments and operations conducted to date by the Afghan National Army. The U.S. delegation briefed upcoming challenges and the need for continued cooperative efforts to eliminate enemies of stability in the region.
