Raids in Iraq on Dec. 5 netted 36 suspected insurgents, including two cell leaders.
Soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division detained 12 individuals in a raid designed to kill or capture members of a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device cell south of Bayji.
Later, division soldiers captured two anti-Iraqi force cell leaders in separate raids conducted in the Tikrit area. The first occurred in the town of Owja and resulted in the capture of a known cell leader. A second raid in Tikrit also resulted in the apprehension of a cell leader.
Also on Dec. 5, multinational forces from 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, a Stryker Brigade Combat Team, and Iraqi security forces detained 22 people suspected of anti-Iraqi activities in northern Iraq. Those captures bring the total detained in a seven-day period to 232.
Special Iraqi police commandos from the Interior Ministry and soldiers from 2nd Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, conducted a joint cordon-and-search operation in Tal Afar and detained 19 people suspected of planning and conducting attacks against multinational and Iraqi forces.
During a search of various residences, five AK-47 assault rifles, two machine guns, a shotgun and a mortar sight were confiscated.
Iraqi National Guard soldiers and soldiers from 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, also conducted a joint cordon-and-search operation in northeast Mosul and detained three people suspected of conducting attacks on multinational forces in eastern Mosul. Also in Mosul, anti-Iraqi insurgents fired a rocket- propelled grenade into the Aumat Al Talib Mosque while apparently trying to hit an Iraqi police station.
During the same incident, the insurgents shot and killed a civilian outside the mosque in western Mosul.
Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, responded, noticed damage to the Mosque's outer dome, and discovered the deceased civilian. Multinational forces interviewed witnesses, who were vocal in their outrage of the insurgents' actions, officials said.
No multinational or Iraqi forces reported injuries in any operation.
